16 Years of Ghajini: A milestone in Bollywood’s cinematic journey
In 2008, Bollywood witnessed a cinematic revolution with Aamir Khan's Ghajini. At a time when formulaic storytelling dominated mainstream cinema, Ghajini emerged as a trailblazer, seamlessly blending intense thrills with deep emotions. The film not only captivated audiences but also etched its name in history by inaugurating Bollywood's iconic ₹100 crore club.
The narrative followed Sanjay Singhania, a wealthy tycoon, who falls in love with Kalpana, a struggling actress. Hiding his true identity, Sanjay wins her heart. However, their love story takes a tragic turn when Kalpana is brutally murdered, and Sanjay suffers a grievous head injury, leaving him with short-term memory loss. Armed with tattoos and Polaroid photographs, Sanjay sets out on a relentless quest for revenge against the sinister antagonist, Ghajini.
Director A.R. Murugadoss made a bold creative choice by naming the film after its villain rather than the protagonist. This unconventional decision added an extra layer of intrigue and became one of the film's defining aspects.
Beyond its gripping storyline, Ghajini shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2008 and the first Bollywood movie to cross ₹100 crore domestically. This achievement set a benchmark that films continue to chase to this day. The film's legacy extended beyond cinema screens with the launch of Ghajini: The Game, a 3D video game based on Aamir Khan's character.
Complementing its powerful narrative was a chart-topping soundtrack by A.R. Rahman. Songs like Aye Bachchu, Behka, Guzaarish, Latoo, and Kaise Mujhe remain timeless classics that continue to resonate with fans.
The film starred Aamir Khan, Asin Thottumkal (in her Hindi film debut), Jiah Khan, and Pradeep Rawat. Their performances, coupled with Murugadoss's direction and Rahman's music, created a cinematic experience that still feels fresh and impactful.
Sixteen years later, Ghajini remains a landmark film that not only entertained millions but also redefined Bollywood's approach to storytelling and box office success.
