Apple in talks to invest in OpenAI, eyes $100 bn valuation in major AI push

Apple is reportedly in discussions to invest in OpenAI, the leading force behind ChatGPT and a major player in generative artificial intelligence, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The tech giant, known for its iPhones, is said to be involved in OpenAI's latest funding round, which aims to raise capital to support the development of new technologies.

OpenAI is seeking to reach a valuation of $100 billion in this funding round, with Thrive Capital leading the effort by contributing one billion dollars. Microsoft, OpenAI's largest investor, is also participating in the round and retains a significant share of the startup's profits.

The potential investment by Apple would come at a time when the company is preparing to unveil its new iPhones on September 9, which are expected to include optimized AI features. In June, Apple announced that OpenAI's technology would be available as an option in its high-end iPhones' software, alongside AI tools from other companies.

While Apple primarily uses its own AI technology, more complex tasks can be delegated to OpenAI's systems if customers choose to do so. If the investment goes through, it would mark a significant move for Apple into the AI space as OpenAI continues to grow into one of the most valuable tech companies globally.
