Blackout Review: An Unraveled Plot in the Dark of Night
Think over; how safe is it to step out to buy an 'anda-paav' in midst of a power blackout?!! Quite okey, you would say?!!
Nah, if we go by the latest OTT release titled Blackout, it is advisable to stay put in your home cosy... else your life won't be anymore rosy!!
After all, look what our protagonist Lenny (Vikrant Massey) goes through...from retired gangsters, crooked politicians and corrupt cops to a femmè fatale and sinister plots, this dude encounters them all in a single night. Just for one 'anda-paav'. Woof, hit the roof!!
On a serious note, Blackout might have been an interesting premise on paper but its execution reeks of excess, specifically in the second hour. Too many things unravel and every character big or small, seems to have his own agenda on the sly. Set entirely in one night just like Ketan Mehta's far superior Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995), the outcome is not as deliciously crazy or bizarre as that underrated classic.
Of the cast, Vikrant Massey is reliably competent in the lead role. The gorgeous Mouni Roy doesn't get much scope. Her character deserved more gravitas. Sunil Grover is outstanding as Bewadya, the drunk hitchhiker revelling in unwanted poetry. Chhaya Kadam as the corrupt politician, leaves a mark even in a small role.
Premiered on Jio Cinema this week, Blackout will surprise and entertain you only in bits and pieces. Not bad for a lazy OTT watch though!!
