Brands, Bharat, Bhakti – A Maha Kumbh opportunity for marketers in 2025
The Maha Kumbh Mela, widely considered to be the largest religious gathering in the world, will be held at Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh from January 13 to February 26, 2025. Held every 12 years, this massive spiritual event is more than just a religious gathering; it is also a colossal business opportunity, attracting millions of pilgrims from around the globe. As the largest event of its kind, Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will combine tradition with modernity, offering a platform for technological integration and economic growth.
The Spiritual Significance
Held every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela is a major pilgrimage event for Hindus, drawing millions to the holy confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Sarasvati rivers at Prayagraj. As per various estimates, over 40 crore devotees are expected to visit Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. Devotees believe that taking a ritual dip in the sacred waters during the Mela will cleanse them of sins and lead to spiritual liberation. The Mela is a celebration of faith, tradition, and cultural heritage, making it a powerful spiritual event that holds deep significance for people from all walks of life.
Mega Scale of Maha Kumbh 2025
The 2025 Maha Kumbh promises to be even grander than the previous Kumbh in 2019. Comparative data from the Uttar Pradesh government reveals that the event is set to witness a footfall of over 40 crore (400 million) pilgrims, a significant increase from the 25 crore pilgrims who attended the 2019 edition.
Spanning a massive 4,000 hectares, the Mela area has been expanded by 20% compared to 2019. The ground will be divided into 25 sectors to accommodate the larger crowd. The tent city, which has grown in size, will now host 1.6 lakh tents, double the number from 2019. The number of ghats has also increased, with nine pucca ghats (permanent bathing areas) in place of the four from the previous event. Additionally, 30 pontoon bridges will be set up, a notable increase from 22 in 2019.
Infrastructure has been significantly upgraded, with 400 kilometers of temporary roads being built, a 35% increase from 2019, and the installation of 67,000 streetlights, compared to 40,000 previously. To meet the energy demands of the Mela, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has set up two new substations and 66 transformers. Furthermore, the water supply infrastructure has been revamped, with 1,249 kilometers of new pipelines feeding over 200 water ATMs and 85 water booths, compared to the previous 1,049 kilometers of pipeline and just 10 water ATM booths.
These large-scale infrastructure upgrades ensure that the Mela will run smoothly and cater to the needs of millions of pilgrims visiting Prayagraj over the 45 days of the event.
Infrastructure and Technological Advancements
To cater to the huge influx of pilgrims, the Uttar Pradesh government has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for infrastructure upgrades. The funds will go toward improving basic facilities, transportation systems, and amenities across the vast 4,000-hectare Mela grounds. This move reflects the ambition of the organizers to ensure a smooth, organized, and comfortable experience for all participants.
A key feature of the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will be the integration of advanced technologies to assist pilgrims and enhance their experience. Some of the cutting-edge innovations include:
AI-Powered Chatbots: Named ‘Sah‘AI’yak’, the AI-driven chatbot will provide real-time updates, navigation assistance, and personalized guidance in multiple languages. Pilgrims can access the chatbot via the mobile app or WhatsApp for user-friendly navigation and other helpful features.
Digital Navigation: In partnership with Google, the event will offer a specialized navigation system to help devotees locate essential sites, ghats, akhadas, and saints. This is the first time Google has provided navigation services for a temporary event of this magnitude.
AI Surveillance: To manage crowd density and ensure safety, AI-enabled cameras and drones will be deployed to monitor real-time data. This will allow authorities to respond proactively to any potential issues, ensuring the smooth flow of people across the vast Mela grounds.
Commercial Potential and Branding Opportunities
The economic impact of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 is expected to be substantial, with estimates suggesting a contribution of over Rs 2 lakh crore to Uttar Pradesh’s economy. This economic boom will be fueled by spending on transportation, accommodation, food, and other services as pilgrims arrive from every corner of the world.
The Maha Kumbh is already boosting local trade with a surge in demand for Maha Kumbh-themed products like diaries, calendars, jute bags, and stationery. According to government sources, sales have increased by up to 25% due to meticulous branding.

A Golden Opportunity for Brands: Innovative Marketing Strategies

In the upcoming Mela, marketers are preparing to test new products and engage with attendees through various innovative strategies. These include offering health services, eco-friendly initiatives, and sponsoring facilities such as sanitation stations. The blend of technology, infrastructure investment, and innovative marketing strategies will help the event retain its cultural significance while embracing modern advancements to accommodate millions of pilgrims.
For brands, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 will offer a twofold return on investment: immediate visibility and long-term customer engagement. It will help brands build goodwill, especially in rural markets, where the event draws a significant number of pilgrims. By providing essential services and aligning their branding with the values of the Kumbh Mela, companies can position themselves as not only market leaders but also contributors to the spiritual and social well-being of the attendees.
