Brands celebrate the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi!

One of the most cherished and revered festivals in India, Ganesh Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a celebration of the birth of Lord Ganesha and is a 10-day festival that pays tribute and offers prayers to Lord Ganesha who is the remover of obstacles or the God of new beginnings and also the God of intelligence and wisdom. The festival is observed and celebrated throughout India by the Hindus, particularly in the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, and others. It is also celebrated in New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, etc by the Hindu diaspora living there.

This year Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 7th, and it starts on the fourth day of Bhadrapada month. The elephant-headed deity is worshipped by placing his idols on raised platforms or in decorated outdoor tents. The worship begins with a ritual called ‘Pranaprathishtha’ which is the evocation of an aspect of life in the idols for making them come alive and is followed by shhodashopachara or 16 days of paying homage. Idols are then covered with red sandalwood paste amid the chanting of Vedic hymns from religious texts such as the Ganesh Upanishad. Lord Ganesha is then offered his favorite sweet dumplings as many as twenty-one modaks, coconuts, and jaggery.

The propitious festival of Ganesh Chaturthi ends by carrying the idols of Lord Ganesha in big processions to the local rivers and coincides with the playing of devotional drumbeats, songs, and dancing, after which the idols are submerged in the rivers which represent Lord Ganesha’s journey towards Mount Kailas, the home of Parvati and Shiva, his parents.

Ganesh Chaturthi became a grand public celebration when the Maratha ruler, Shivaji used it for invoking nationalist sentiments among his subjects fighting against the Mughals. Again in 1893 when the British banned political assemblies, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Indian nationalist leader led the revival of the festival.
