Certain business messaging won’t be allowed in certain countries: Meta

Meta on Tuesday announced that it will allow alcohol and real money gaming companies to advertise in India, APAC and LATAM. From August 27, 2024 onwards, WhatsApp Business Platform can be onboarded by businesses in India for sending out messages related to alcohol, real money gambling as well as over-the-counter products.

Yesterday (August 22, 2024), Meta issued a statement saying that certain business messaging are not going to be allowed in certain countries, including India. Meta further added that the referenced communication for its business policies lacked precision.

A Meta spokesperson said, “When we set business policies for our service, we respect local laws, and therefore certain business messaging or other types of communication are not going to be allowed in certain countries, including India. The referenced communication lacked that precision that is reflected in our formal policies and documents.”

Once the policy is updated, it will reflect the countries where businesses can use WhatsApp to send business messaging on regulated verticals.

As per the policy, people are in control of the businesses they choose to chat with on WhatsApp and can stop chatting with the business at any time.

WhatsApp Business Services seeks to enable rich, conversational experiences between businesses and WhatsApp users.
