"Crazxy": Experimental Bollywood thriller falls short at the finish line
Coming from Bollywood, a highly experimental film like Crazxy needs to be highlighted and celebrated. It assumes all the more importance with Sohum Shah at the helm, whose offbeat Tumbbad (2018) created ripples at the box office in the recent re-run. While the overall movie experience is commendable, Crazxy's ending plays a spoilsport...
A solo actor show; Shah plays Dr. Abhimanyu, who is out to settle a botched up surgery case until he gets a call that his daughter is kidnapped. In a unique twist, the kidnapper asks exactly the same ransom amount, which Abhimamyu is carrying with him.
At crisp one and half hours of runtime, Crazxy engages you, thrills you and leaves you guessing right till its end. Alas, the film goes wrong, in fact horribly wrong only in its culmination when the motive of the kidnapping is revealed. That's more of an anti-climax and a huge turn off!!!
Sohum Shah is truly outstanding as Dr. Abhimanyu, who gets entangled in a strange 'chakravyuh' as he ventures in to an unwanted road trip. Note his performance in the scene where he is changing his car tyre and guiding a junior surgeon at the same time. Tinnu Anand (kidnapper), Shilpa Shukla (girlfriend Jaan) and others lend good support as voices on the protagonist's mobile phone.
At the near empty Gemini Cinema, Bandra, the audience appeared unenthused through the proceedings, caring more about their smartphone messages and partners in tow.
Finally, Crazxy is that kinda film, which will exit theatres by Monday and then re-release ten years later and become a surprise hit. I saved my future money by watching it today... probably the ticket rates will be double by then!!
