Adgully has been turning the spotlight on the entrepreneurs who fought against all odds to bring their dreams to fruition in our special series – START-UP STARS. We at Adgully wholeheartedly support the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement and have been featuring numerous local/ homegrown businesses, brands, and Apps in the country launched in the last few years.

What started as a bakery is now full-fledged cafe. Established by couple Utsav and Aavika Chhawchharia, Honey and Dough started off with its first outlet in Delhi’s Defence Colony in 2016. The aim was to fulfil the need for a quality bakery that would address the requirements of every customer by being a one-stop shop for a range of products – from ambrosial desserts to appetizing savouries. Honey and Dough is a French-inspired patisserie, a venture under horizontal expansion by ANR International in its current line of business, ANR Foodworks LLP.

In conversation with Adgully, Aavika Chhawcharia, Founder, Honey and Dough, speaks about the vision behind founding Honey and Dough, the level of access to funding and investment for startups in India, government initiatives, evolution in the bakery and cafe industry in the next few years, and more.

What was your vision behind founding Honey and Dough, and what challenges did you encounter during the initial phase?

The vision behind founding Honey & Dough was to create a homegrown pan-India bakery cafe brand that could cater to the diverse tastes of all age groups. The aim was to ensure that everything, from breads to sauces, was made in-house to maintain quality and authenticity. The initial challenges included establishing a strong brand identity in a competitive market and ensuring consistency in the quality of the products while scaling up.

What is the level of access to funding and investment for startups in India? How did Honey and Dough navigate this aspect during its growth?

Honey & Dough has been self-funded since its inception. Navigating the financial aspect with own investment allowed for greater control and freedom in decision-making, which was crucial during the growth phase.
