'Do not light the funeral pyre!'

In today’s times where women are taking on more challenging roles in society, it is not surprising that our on screen television characters are also enacting roles fit for modern & contemporary India.  Doing something that is different is Reet of Zee TV’s Mera Naam Karegi Roshan as she is shown lighting her father’s funeral pyre, thereby fulfilling his last wish.

However sources on the set tell us that while Reet, (enacted by Amrapali Dubey), is looking forward to performing on this important scene on the show, her parents have been expressing their reservations about the scene as it goes against traditions where a girl is not allowed to participate in her father’s funeral rites. Amrapali has been having a tough time explaining how the crux of the story lies in making her parents proud, doing all that is required to upkeep the family honour and being the son of the family.

“Even though it is solely for on-screen purposes, my parents are definitely a little concerned about me having to act out such a scene. My mum is especially vociferous in her concerns since she firmly believes that it goes against our religion and its principles that dictate that it is not a woman’s role to play. But I have managed to convince them on how important it is for the show storyline and how we have to change with changing times. Daughters should be treated equally as sons and I hope my role makes a difference for the better in the mindsets of our viewers,” said Amrapali when we contacted her.
