Dream-chaser Ashish Patil quits MTV to join Yash Raj Films

Ashish Patil, currently a senior vice-president (new ventures) at Viacom 18, will take over as Yash Raj Films' business and creative head on April 1. At Viacom 18, he had the additional portfolio of general manager, youth movies.

Patil told Adgully in an exclusive interaction that his mandate at Yash Raj Films includes the establishment of a new division that will develop and produce youth films. "My role will be to look at all aspects of this division and make motion pictures that rock the youth!" Patil told Adgully.

Patil said his latest engagement would involve creative reorientation. "I am sure my new workplace will yield a new set of learnings," he said. "It will probably also involve unlearning of some of the notions I have picked up over the 12 years I spent at MTV. " But he said that he expected to be able to apply at least some of the wisdom he had acquired at the channel, particularly in relation to youth audiences. "I will be talking to the same demographic," he said. "I have also learnt at MTV to make work such fun that one does not feel it is work. I am hoping to carry that ability with me wherever I go, always!"

Patil then shared his credo with Adgully. "Chase your dreams! Do what you want. That is the only career advice I would ever give anyone," he said. "The principle has three key parts. DO what you want. Don't just talk about it, DO it." Patil said that since life was impermanent, it was important to fulfill ambitions. "If you want to make a movie, make a movie. If you want to write a book, write it," he said. "Start now. Do what YOU want. Don't let the noise of other people's thinking drown your inner voice. Don't become a chartered accountant just because your parents want that." He said he nearly went down that path. "Fortunately, I had my own Rancho to intervene and save my life," he said. "Have the balls to follow your heart. It knows what you want. I am hoping I will be able to chase some new mad dreams in this new assignment."
