Editors Guild now responsible for awarding Prem Bhatia journalism awards

Under a new arrangement, the Editors Guild of India will take on the responsibility of awarding the two prestigious Prem Bhatia journalism awards – one for Excellence in Political Journalism and the other for Environmental Journalism – from 2025. In addition, the Guild will organise the annual Prem Bhatia Memorial Lecture.

Instituted in 1995 in memory of the late Prem Bhatia, the legendary former editor of The Tribune, the Editors Guild will assume these twin responsibilities following an agreement with the Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust. As part of this agreement, the Prem Bhatia Memorial Trust has donated its entire corpus to the Editors Guild, enabling the Guild to fund the two awards and the memorial lecture from next year.

Over the years, the annual awards and memorial lecture have become highly anticipated events in Indian journalism. The Editors Guild is committed to ensuring that these traditions remain as prestigious in the future. Previous recipients of the two awards include the People’s Archive of India (PARI), Rajdeep Sardesai, Neerja Chowdhury, Aakar Patel, Josy Joseph, and Dainik Bhaskar. Notable figures who have delivered the memorial lecture include Dr Karan Singh, Dr MS Swaminathan, Zoya Hasan, Soli Sorabjee, Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Shyam Saran, Inder Malhotra, and TN Ninan.
