Female content creators can create more inclusive storytelling in gaming: Mansi Gupta
Adgully has consistently celebrated and acknowledged the accomplishments of women entrepreneurs and leaders in various sectors. One of our notable initiatives, W-SUITE, focuses on highlighting extraordinary women achievers in the Media & Entertainment, Advertising, Marketing, PR, and Communications industry. In this updated series, we aim to explore how women leaders adeptly manage their teams and overcome challenges in the dynamic landscape of their respective industries.
In this interview, Mansi Gupta, Chief Business Officer, Opraahfx, speaks about her journey as a woman leader in the gaming industry, navigating challenges, advocating for inclusivity, and empowering future women leaders. Gupta reflects upon the evolution of female representation in gaming content creation, the significance of mentorship, and how women creators can influence game development and narratives. Her goal is to break stereotypes and inspire a more balanced participation in gaming and content creation, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.
As a woman leader in gaming, how do you navigate challenges to pave the way for future women leaders in the industry?
I’ve always believed that leadership is defined by vision, expertise, and how you steer the company, and it has nothing to do with gender. I never looked at my work with a gender perspective, or brought that in my mind or allowed anyone to seed in that thought. Because I believe such a narrative ultimately becomes an obstruction in our way and this attitude has helped me to bring in business and take the company ahead. Yes, initially when I started content creation there were some obstructions but I took their reaction as feedback. This approach helps to bring fresh perspectives and drive meaningful change. No doubt challenges exist in every field, especially when you’re forging a path that’s less traveled, but that’s where true growth happens.
Undoubtedly, women’s representation is crucial in every industry, especially in sectors dominated by men, like the gaming segment. When young women see others who have carved their own paths in a male-dominated industry, it inspires them to envision new possibilities.
How do you think the gaming industry can further empower women and promote inclusivity?
First and foremost, we need to create safe spaces within gaming communities that can provide women with a more comfortable and supportive environment to engage in. At the same time, mixed-gender spaces should actively foster respectful and inclusive interactions, irrespective of men and women, as a community for them to rise in gaming. If we want to see change, we will all play a vital role in advocating for gender equality, challenging sexist behaviour, and promoting inclusivity. It is essential that women feel encouraged by their inner circles and are given the freedom to explore various roles, ensuring they're not limited to or concentrated in specific fields or categories.
What changes have you seen regarding female representation in gaming content creators over the years?
When I started my journey as a woman gaming content creator, I was among the first to come in this industry. There were very few creators who chose to take gaming ahead. Over the years, the industry has seen a favourable shift as more women are taking interest in the gaming content creator’s space.
As an influencer marketing agency, we are supporting over 500 creators, among which there are many micro-creators from different backgrounds, like fashion, lifestyle, travel and gaming, for sure. We currently manage female gaming creators like India’s very favourite Gautami Kawale (Slayypoint) along with others like Samiksha Senger, Mansi Soni, Ritu Moni Roy, Sanjana who are excelling in the content creation space and we, as an agency, are supporting them to thrive in this competitive influencer ecosystem. Where initially the gaming space was dominated by male creators only, now we’re seeing so many talented female creators stepping into the spotlight.
We’re also seeing more support from gaming platforms and brands, who are recognizing and elevating female voices. It’s creating a more inclusive community, and it is only making the space richer and more innovative. There’s still room for growth, but the progress so far has been really encouraging.
Could you share a moment when mentorship significantly impacted your career, and how can women in gaming create supportive networks for one another?
Honestly, when I first entered this industry, it was still in its very early stages, and only a handful of people were part of this driven solely by passion. My growth was largely shaped by a lot of trial and error, and taking risks along the way. Since the industry was so new, there weren’t many mentors to turn to. I understand how crucial it is to build a supportive network, and it starts with collaboration over competition. Sharing resources, advice, and experiences can be incredibly powerful. Whether through online communities, mentorship programs, or even informal group chats, having a safe space to discuss challenges and celebrate wins makes all the difference.
In what ways can female content creators influence the types of games developed and the narratives told within them, especially the in game female avatars?
Creators have the power to influence their audiences, which can steer the spotlight toward games that get representation right. By voicing their opinions and showcasing games that break stereotypes, female content creators can challenge the longstanding conventions of how women are portrayed in gaming. Women gaming creators can together form a strong opinion. By supporting and promoting games that feature strong, well-rounded female characters, creators can drive the demand for more inclusive storytelling. This, in turn, can encourage developers to prioritize diverse perspectives and narratives, knowing there’s a market for them. This doesn’t just impact female characters, but also the larger narratives around gender roles, creating space for more diverse and authentic storytelling.
What legacy do you hope to leave in the gaming industry for the next generation of female gamers and leaders?
As a woman, I truly hope to see more equal participation of both men and women across every segment, surely especially in gaming and content creation. I feel fortunate to have been one of the pioneers, particularly as a woman in this space. My goal is to help break the stereotypical notion that leadership roles in gaming are primarily reserved for men. Women have so much to contribute to this industry, and I’m excited to see more of us taking on leadership positions and shaping the future of gaming.
