FICCI Frames spotted the leaders of film, media and digital on Day 2

The boastful sessions of second day begun with the speech of Herman Lopez, CEO, Fox International TV at FICCI Frames 2012. This was followed by discussion on "The Converged Future- Multiple Platforms, Technologies and Transforming Applications for Media and Entertainment' with Sanket Akrekar, MD, Microsoft India, Jonathan Bill, Head, Internet & VAS, Vodafone India and Neeraj Roy, MD & CEO, Hungama Digital Entertainment as panellist.

Akrekar, said, "For film-makers who are keen to work with the idea of gaming, should understand the facts that there is a business model that need to be follow, innovations should be done and the one's which will make sense."

The session on "Freedom of Media- Significance of Self-Regulation' discussed about the phenomenon of "breaking" news that is flooding in the news market and has come under severe public criticism. The panellist for this session were Justice JS Verma, Former Chief Justice, Supreme Court, Narayan Rao, President, NBA & Executive Vice Chairperson, NDTV, Kiran Karnik, Eminent Member, News Broadcasting Standards Authority & former President, NASSCOM, Philip Turner, Chief of Bureau, CNN International, South Asia, Nitin Desai, Former Under Secretary General, United nations and Eminent Member. NBSA which was headed by BArun Das, VP, NBA & CEO Zee News Ltd. as the Moderator. The session discussed about the right of freedom and the key role of media. Verma stated, "Media and judiciary is the strongest pillar as media records and judiciary decides."

Verma further said, "Is breaking news have any reality or truth based fact in it. If it's not there in content so why it is the "breaking news'. The breaking news is flooding and should be controlled."

Rao said, " Now viewers have the right and authority to complaint and raise their voice against content by writing to National Broadcasters Association, and they should utilize it."

The session concluded with the fact that there should be a Self 'regulation practiced independently by government and individual. And should be termed as independent regulation.

For the session on 'Innovations in the advertising industry in the digital world' a panel of digital experts were assigned, which discussed about the the viability of digital as a medium for advertising - a much dissected topic since the launch of the medium itself.

The panel was moderated by Rajiv Makhni, managing editor, technology, NDTV, the session included speakers Rajan Anandan, vice-president and MD, Google India; Olivier Fleurot, CEO, MSL Group; Frederic Josue, executive director, Havas Media; Vikram Sakhuja, CEO, South Asia, GroupM; Kapil Agarwal, joint MD, UFO Moviez and Varun Gupta, director, strategy transaction services, KPMG India.

Fleurot discussed about the disruption happening in traditional media advertising, brought about by social media tools. He said, "Despite this, advertisers seem to be organised for the 20th century, and not the 21st. "They still operate in silos such as marketing, PR, BTL and ATL, whereas on the online medium, those silos disappear."

Anandan said, "According to me, the year 2012 will be the year of the online video, There are currently 35-40 million users of online video in India today, and YouTube generates around 25 million unique users a month."

The session "From East to West ' the next big thing in gaming' discussed about the evolving business models globally, where the traditional console gaming segment coming under a pressure, while the new segments are growing such as social gaming, mobile gaming and the combination of both."

It was followed by the session titled 'Building sustainable models for niche programming content' was that its panellists disagreed with the session title itself. Moderated by Paritosh Joshi, CEO, STAR CJ, the session had panellists such as Smeeta Chakrabarti, CEO, NDTV Lifestyle; Monica Tata, general manager, Entertainment Networks, South Asia for Turner International India; Ajay Chacko, president, A+E Networks ITV18 JV; Atul Pande, CEO, sports business, ZEE; and Rasika Tyagi, senior vice-president, English programming, STAR India.

Chacko started the conversation by explaining the term 'niche'. Niche is a currency used not just by the consumer or the advertiser, but by the media buyer as well, said Chacko."I think we should look at absolute numbers and not just percentages, and stop classifying content as niche."

A session on "OOH in India - The Innovation Imperative' were headed by panellists Pratap Bose, COO, DDB Mudra Group; Anuradha Aggarwal, vice-president, brand communication and insights, Vodafone Essar and Dennis Sullivan, strategy advisor with Sunder Hemrajani, MD, Times as the moderator which focussed on the best practices to encourage innovative execution, thus bringing up the need for OOH innovation in India.

The session on "The Art of moviemaking-director's cut' had directors Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Imtiaz Ali, Bruce Beresford (director of "Driving Miss Daisy') and award winning Australian filmmaker Robyn Kershaw were giving their view of "The Art of Movie-Making: Director's Cut', moderated by Amol Gupte.

Kashyap said, "I feel that the year 2012 is would be the landmark year in the history of Indian film industry that is to celebrate its 100 years next year. This has been proved by two low budget films "Paan Singh Tomar' and "Kahaani' which is doing great with Kahani as hit."

The day ended with the highlights about digital, media, director's viewpoint and other workshops and skilful sessions.
