Goodbye, Vistara (2015-2024): India Bids Farewell to a Beloved Airline
Vistara, launched in 2015 as a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, quickly became one of India's most cherished premium airlines. Known for its exceptional in-flight service, customer-centric approach, and high-quality travel experience, Vistara set new standards in Indian aviation. Over nearly a decade, the airline expanded its fleet and destinations, blending luxury with efficiency and earning a loyal passenger base. As it took its final flight on November 11, 2024, Vistara prepared for its next chapter, with plans to merge into Air India, leaving a legacy of excellence and treasured memories for travelers across India.

In an emotional farewell message to its partners, Vistara wrote, “As our plane takes flight, so do our dreams; let’s soar into the future, where the sky is not a limit but a beginning.” The final flight also featured a heartfelt tribute, with the crew playing the Bollywood classic Kal Ho Naa Ho upon landing—symbolizing the end of one chapter and the dawn of another. The farewell marked not only the airline’s closure but also its transition into a new era under Air India, carrying forward its legacy and vision.
Business strategist Lloyd Mathias agrees, noting that "it is improbable to sustain Vistara's premium positioning following the merger with Air India." As Vistara's team integrates with Air India, the unique essence of the brand may fade, leaving behind only memories of a time when passengers felt luxury was within reach.
This merger marks a major milestone in India’s aviation industry, creating one of the world’s largest airline groups and giving Air India a strong competitive edge both domestically and internationally. It reflects Tata Group's strategic move to unify its airline portfolio, with Singapore Airlines retaining a 25.1% stake in the newly merged entity following a substantial investment, positioning Tata to expand its influence in Indian aviation.
Anil Swarup,Founder Chairman, Nexus of Good posted on Linked saying, "Compliments to Vistara - TATA SIA Airlines Ltd. for setting new standards of efficiency and courteous service in the airline industry. As a proud frequent flier on this airline, I will miss you. Hope AIRINDIA LIMITED will emulate such standards.
Krishna Daswwani, Vice President, Creative & Content says, "Vistara - TATA SIA Airlines Ltd. Stood like a beacon in branding, in experience, in grace, in customer love which many airlines have lost. Adieu goodness. The closest thing to Jet Airways. Even flying economy can give a business class experience & it’s not about the size of the seat or leg room. It’s much much more."
Nitish Saxena, Head of Brand Marketing, FNP posted on his Linkedin saying, "As Air India Limited prepares to absorb Vistara - TATA SIA Airlines Ltd. into its ranks, the promise is that your beloved Vistara experience – world-class service, familiar crew, and top-notch fleet – won't disappear."
Though Tata is relatively new to the global airline arena compared to seasoned leaders like Singapore Airlines, the merger leaves behind Vistara’s legacy of aspiration and luxury. Passengers experienced a glimpse of excellence that made the sky feel like just the beginning. Now, under Tata’s leadership, Air India takes on the mantle to honor this legacy, aiming to elevate these skies with renewed purpose.
