Google to restructure Ad sales by laying off 30,000 employees: Reports

Is history being repeated at Tech giant Google?

The reports are hinting at layoffs once again at Google. It is reported that the company would be laying off 30,000 employees from its ad sales unit due to lot of advancements in AI.

Even last year, Google had fired 12,000 employees.

Google is reportedly planning to restructure the ad sales department of the company due to the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in operations. The announcement of the restructing was made by Google's president of the Americas and Global Partners Sean Downey last week.

This has sparked concerns that there can be a hefty layoff coming in the ad sales unit of Google, which consists of 30,000 people. The decisions to lay off certain number of employees were reportedly discussed during a department-wide Google Ads meeting. This comes after Google had unveiled its "new era of AI-powered ads", where Google was introducing conversational ads.

The AI-powered campaign planner Performance Max was launched in 2021 by Google, which updated it with generative AI-based features at the I/O event this year. The upgrade made it easier for the planner to create custom ads and scale them.

An increasing number of advertisers have reportedly adopted Performance Max to sell ads for Google services like YouTube, Search, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.
