Indian Ad pioneer Walter Saldanha dies at 96

Walter Saldanha, co-founder of Chaitra Advertising (now Leo Burnett India), passed away on December 28, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Indian advertising.
Starting his career as a typist in 1947, Walter rose through the ranks at J. Walter Thompson and Aiyars before co-founding Chaitra Advertising with Brendan Pereira in 1972. The agency began modestly but soon earned a reputation for creativity and client focus, securing marquee clients, including Dhirubhai Ambani’s Vimal.

Chaitra became an affiliate of Leo Burnett in 1987 and eventually transitioned to Leo Burnett India in 2000. Walter retired as Chairman Emeritus, having built one of India's top advertising agencies.
Beyond advertising, Walter founded the Asian Institute of Communication and Research in Matheran, supported leprosy eradication efforts, and worked extensively with the Slum Rehabilitation Society.
A quiet yet influential leader, Walter shaped countless careers and made significant social contributions. His legacy endures through the professionals he mentored and the causes he championed.
May he rest in peace.
