Indian Media Moguls Sue OpenAI for Copyright Infringement
A group of Indian media giants, including Reliance Industries' Mukesh Ambani and Adani Group's Gautam Adani, alongside major publications like The Indian Express and Hindustan Times, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a Delhi court. The suit alleges that OpenAI utilized copyrighted content from Indian news websites without authorization to train its AI models, specifically ChatGPT.
This legal action joins a growing global movement against OpenAI, with numerous authors, news organizations, and musicians worldwide pursuing similar lawsuits. The outcome of this case could significantly impact the relationship between generative AI companies and the media industry.
OpenAI, in response, has argued that it lacks a physical presence in India and that its training data servers are located outside the country. Furthermore, the company cited ongoing litigation in the US as a reason for preserving all data, including the allegedly infringed upon content.
