IRS Q2 2011 Result: Figures indicate growth for some English dailies, while a drop for others.

The Indian Readership Survey 2011 is out with the results for the second quarter. The result as it looks like, has brought joy for some while a little pinch for others.

The Times of India continues to be the largest read English daily of the country. But when compared to Q1 of IRS 2011, the marginal growth is supported by addition of about 29,000 readers, taking its average issue readership (AIR) from 74.42 lakh in Q1 to 74.71 lakh in Q2.

Though at No. 2, Hindustan Times, along with Deccan Chronicle at No. 5 has seen considerable percentage growth. Adding 45,000 readers in Q2 2011, HT takes it AIR to 37.37 lakh compared with 36.92 lakh in Q1 2011. Deccan Chronicle had lost 38,000 readers in Q1 2011; but now has added 53,000 readers in Q2 of IRS 2011. Its current AIR stands at 10.88 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 10.35 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

The Hindu, country's No.3 English daily, has lost about 18,000 readers for the second quarter in a row. It has recorded an AIR of 20.77 lakh compared with 20.95 lakh in the previous quarter.

Sticking to No.4 position, The Telegraph has registered marginal growth than last quarter. It had lost about 35,000 readers in Q1of IRS 2011 and its AIR in Q2 stands at 12.09 lakh compared with 12.03 lakh in the previous quarter. Similarly, DNA continues to hold its position as the No. 6 daily in the country. In Q1 of IRS 2011, took this position by displacing The Economic Times by adding 72,000. Its current AIR is at 8.24 lakh as against 8.22 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Climbing to No. 7 is The Economic Times, with an AIR of 7.85 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 compared with 7.69 lakh in IRS Q1 2011. The business daily has added 16,000 readers in this quarter of IRS2011.

At No. 8 is Mumbai Mirror. Losing about 22,000 readers in this quarter, its current AIR stands at 7.58 lakh compared with 7.80 lakh in the last quarter. At the ninth position is The Tribune, despite a marginal loss of just 2,000 readers. Compared with its AIR of 5.69 lakh in Q1 2011; the Tribune's current AIR stands at 5.67 lakh.

Though at the bottom of the list of top 10 dailies; The New Indian Express showing some growth. Adding 9,000 readers in this quarter, it's taken its AIR from 5.5 lakh in the previous quarter to 5.59 lakh in IRS Q2 2011. | By Ankita Tanna [ankita(at)adgully.com]
