Karnataka plans state OTT platform to boost Kannada cinema
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has unveiled a comprehensive plan to revitalize the state's film industry, highlighted by the launch of a dedicated state-run OTT platform for Kannada cinema. This initiative, announced during the state budget, directly addresses concerns from prominent filmmakers like Rakshit Shetty and Rishab Shetty regarding the limited visibility of Kannada films on major streaming services.
The government has earmarked ₹3 crore to create a repository of Kannada films, safeguarding the state’s cultural heritage through both digital and non-digital preservation. The new OTT platform aims to provide filmmakers with a vital channel to showcase their work and reach wider audiences.
Further bolstering the sector, the Chief Minister announced that cinema will be granted "industry status," granting filmmakers access to benefits under the state's Industrial Policy. To enhance affordability, a ₹200 price cap will be implemented for movie tickets across all languages in Karnataka's theatres and multiplexes.
Infrastructure development is also a priority. A multiplex complex will be constructed on 2.5 acres of Karnataka Film Academy land in Bengaluru, utilizing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Moreover, the long-anticipated international Film City in Mysuru will move forward, with 150 acres of land transferred for its development. This ₹500 crore PPP project aims to establish Karnataka as a premier film production hub.
These strategic initiatives demonstrate Karnataka's commitment to fostering a vibrant and sustainable local film industry, providing filmmakers with enhanced distribution, financial support, and world-class infrastructure.
