‘Laapataa Ladies’ exits Oscars race after shortlist revelation

Despite a strong performance and extensive campaigning, Kiran Rao’s debut film could not secure a place in the Oscars' International Feature shortlist. Reports confirm that India's official entry, Laapata Ladies, is excluded from the category for the 97th Academy Awards.

Directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions in collaboration with Kindling Pictures, Laapata Ladies narrates a vibrant tale set against a rural Indian backdrop. The film, which premiered in theaters on March 1, 2024, unfolds a humorous and emotional story of two brides who accidentally switch identities on a train. Its cast includes Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Rana, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam.

During its 13-week theatrical run, Laapata Ladies amassed ₹20.58 crore at the Indian box office, with a worldwide total of ₹27.06 crore against a modest ₹5 crore budget. The film also earned ₹2.75 crore internationally.

The success of the film was bolstered by a robust marketing campaign aimed at elevating its international profile. The 2025 Oscar strategy, led by Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan, included special screenings in London and a globally-focused poster titled Lost Ladies.
