MeitY extends deadline for AI governance guidelines feedback
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the public comment period on its 'Report on AI Governance Guidelines Development' to February 27, 2025. This follows requests from stakeholders for more time to meaningfully engage with the report, which outlines a comprehensive framework for managing AI development and deployment in India.
Key recommendations include:
• Inter-Ministerial AI Coordination Committee: The establishment of a permanent committee to streamline AI policy and regulations across government departments. This body will coordinate efforts, issue joint guidance, and promote self-regulation.
• Focus on Risk Assessment: The committee will play a crucial role in identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with AI systems, particularly those developed by private entities. This will be achieved through regular meetings, risk assessments, and the harmonization of existing regulations.
• Context-Specific Datasets: The report emphasizes the need for Indian-specific datasets to ensure fairness and mitigate bias in AI models. The committee is encouraged to facilitate the creation of these datasets for responsible AI development and evaluation.
The extended deadline provides stakeholders with additional time to submit their valuable feedback on this crucial report.
