NBF condemns actor Mohan Babu’s attack on TV9 journalist

The News Broadcasters Federation (NBF) has slammed the recent verbal and brutal physical attack on M Ranjith Kumar, Senior Correspondent of TV9, by actor Mohan Babu at Jalpally, Hyderabad.

In a statement issued, NBF said, “It is particularly alarming that this incident occurred in the presence of police officials, who failed to intervene or provide adequate protection to the journalist.”

NBF added, “This reprehensible act of violence has resulted in grievous injuries to Mr Ranjith and is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by journalists in the line of duty. Such attacks are not just assaults on individuals, but also on the principles of free speech and the public's right to information.”

The news broadcasters body has demands swift action by the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served in this case, including a thorough investigation and appropriate legal consequences for the perpetrator. “We also call for accountability from the police officers present at the scene, whose inaction highlights an urgent need for reforms to prioritize journalist safety,” NBF added.

To prevent such incidents in the future, the NBF has reiterated its call for a comprehensive national law to safeguard journalists and media professionals. “This legislation should criminalize all forms of violence, threats, or harassment against journalists, and hold accountable any public officials or law enforcement personnel who fail to act in the face of such incidents. It should also mandate the presence of safety protocols and guidelines to ensure journalists can perform their duties without fear,” NBF added.

The NBF has further appealed to all citizens, public figures, and law enforcement to respect the vital role of journalists in the society. “Public discourse and disagreements must be conducted respectfully, without resorting to intimidation or violence,” it stressed.

While extending its full support to Ranjith and TV9 in seeking justice and ensuring his recovery, the NBF affirmed that it will continue to stand firmly with journalists across the country to advocate for their safety, dignity, and the freedom to report without hindrance.
