Netflix eyes Formula 1 US broadcast rights
Netflix is reportedly considering a bid for Formula 1's US broadcasting rights starting in 2026, according to media reports. This move comes as the streaming giant increases its investment in live sports content. A successful bid would allow Netflix to capitalize on the popularity of its docu-series "Drive to Survive," which is credited with boosting Formula 1's global fanbase.
ESPN currently holds the US broadcast rights through 2025. Their exclusive negotiating period with F1 has recently ended, opening the door for other bidders. Neither ESPN, Netflix, Liberty Media, nor F1 have yet commented.
Netflix has been actively expanding its live sports offerings, including events like the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul boxing match and, notably, a $5 billion+ deal for exclusive rights to WWE's Raw in several regions. This strategy aims to drive subscriber growth and advertising revenue, as live events attract large audiences. The news of Netflix's interest in Formula 1 was initially reported by The Times and The Athletic.
