Online news consumption surpasses TV in Ireland
A new report shows a significant shift in how Irish people consume news. For the first time, online news (excluding social media) has become the most popular source (33%), surpassing television (31%). This trend is driven by younger demographics, especially 18-24 year olds, who are increasingly paying for online news content (up 7% to 26%).
While overall trust in news dipped slightly, some outlets like RTÉ and The Irish Times saw a rise. However, concerns about online misinformation are growing, with 71% expressing worry.
Key Findings:
Shifting Source: Online news is now the leading source of news in Ireland.
Younger Audience Leads: Young adults are driving the online news trend and are more likely to pay for it.
Trust Fluctuates: Trust in news dipped slightly, but some outlets gained trust.
Misinformation Concerns Rise: A growing number of people are worried about spotting fake news online, particularly regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
AI in News: Over half are uncomfortable with AI-generated news with minimal human oversight.
Looking Ahead:
The report highlights the need for media to adapt to the online shift while maintaining trust and addressing misinformation. Initiatives are underway to support quality journalism in Ireland.
