Prime Video Overtakes Netflix as the Most In-Demand Movie Library in the US

Amazon Prime Video saw remarkable growth in the U.S. streaming market, securing its position as the second most in-demand subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform by the fourth quarter. According to Parrot Analytics, Prime Video accounted for 16.7% of total content demand on SVOD services, a significant rise from 13.3% in the first quarter when it ranked fourth. This upward trajectory allowed it to surpass competitors like Max and Hulu, putting it just behind Netflix.

One of the main factors fueling Prime Video’s growth was the increasing demand for its movie catalog. By the end of the year, Amazon’s platform had overtaken Netflix as the leading provider of in-demand films in the U.S., with its market share growing from 6.8% in Q1 to 10.7% in Q4.

Prime Video’s expansive library played a crucial role in this success. Before 2024, it already boasted the largest collection of movies among streaming platforms, and that catalog grew by an impressive 71.7% between the first and fourth quarters. This expansion far outpaced other streamers, with Peacock, the second-fastest growing movie library, increasing by just 17.8% over the same period. Amazon’s aggressive content strategy may have been influenced by its upcoming loss of Universal’s live-action films in 2027, when those titles will move to Netflix.

Aside from expanding its library, Prime Video strengthened its appeal by investing in original productions and acquiring rights to popular films. Original titles such as The Idea of You and Road House (2024) helped draw viewers in, while licensing deals further diversified its content offerings. Additionally, the anticipation of new releases sparked renewed interest in previous installments. For example, Terrifier and Terrifier 2 surged in popularity following the buzz around Terrifier 3, while Ridley Scott’s Gladiator experienced a similar resurgence ahead of the highly anticipated Gladiator II.

With a combination of strategic acquisitions, a growing content library, and high-demand films, Prime Video solidified its place as a dominant player in the streaming industry, closing the year with substantial momentum.
