Revitalize Doordarshan, Refine Broadcasting Bill, and Embrace AI, Panel Tells MIB

The Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology (2024-25) has presented its report on the Demand for Grants (DFG) 2025-26 related to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) to Lok Sabha, including important recommendations concerning Doordarshan’s modernization, the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in broadcasting.

Doordarshan Modernization

The committee emphasized the need for Doordarshan to evolve in a competitive media environment while maintaining its public service mandate. Key recommendations include:

Enhancing its digital footprint.
Collaborating with influencers and social media creators to increase reach among younger audiences.
Modernizing its presentation formats for events to appeal to younger demographics.
Increasing localized programming.
Introducing AI-powered project management to ensure timely project completion.

The committee also recommended that the Ministry conduct periodic analyses of initiatives aimed at increasing Doordarshan's viewership.

Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill

The committee acknowledged the intent behind the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. It has recommended that the Ministry:

Conduct a comprehensive review of the feedback received during consultations.
Incorporate key suggestions from stakeholders.
Ensure the bill is holistic, robust, and technology-proof.
Incorporate a provision for periodic reviews and updates.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Broadcasting

The committee has suggested that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting explore integrating AI in the following areas:

Partnering with academic institutions and private-sector AI companies to develop new AI applications in broadcasting.
Monitoring misinformation and disinformation trends.
Integrating AI tools into the content creation process.
Automating services that require minimal human intervention.
Implementing AI solutions for document management, predictive analysis in policymaking, and optimizing administrative processes.
Enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, and engagement of the Ministry's information dissemination processes through AI-driven innovation.
