RwandAir set to finalize stake sale to Qatar Airways

RwandAir is on the verge of finalizing the sale of a significant stake to Qatar Airways, with the deal expected to close as early as next month, according to CEO Yvonne Makolo. Speaking to the media sources, Makolo revealed that the negotiations, which have been ongoing for nearly five years, are now in their final stages.

The agreement will see Qatar Airways acquire a 49% stake in the central African airline for an undisclosed sum. The partnership aims to bolster RwandAir’s growth and enhance its competitiveness in the regional and international markets.

Qatar Airways has a history of investing in African aviation. In 2019, the airline took a 60% stake in a new $1.3 billion international airport currently under construction in Rwanda. Additionally, Qatar Airways maintains code share agreements with several African airlines, including RwandAir, to enhance connectivity and network reach.

Earlier this year, Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer hinted at an upcoming investment in an airline in southern Africa, aligning with the airline’s strategic expansion plans on the continent. Despite the progress, Qatar Airways declined to comment on the current status of the deal, and RwandAir did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The finalization of this stake acquisition is expected to significantly strengthen RwandAir’s operational capabilities and market presence, leveraging Qatar Airways' extensive global network and industry expertise.
