‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ Re-releases to Surprise Success

Today's movie could well feature in the Classics section. That's cos it was released exactly nine years ago in February 2016 and has re-released to a surprise success last week. Anyway, since I spent my two hundred bucks and two and half hours in a near- full theatre, let me review it as a newbie.

Sanam Teri Kasam, a tragic love story featuring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane as a couple, will certainly keep you hooked and engaged even in its second run (it's actually a first viewing for most, including yours truly). The contrasting characters of Inder (Rane) and Saru (Hocane) make an unlikely alliance brought about by destiny. A modern day Laila Majnu, Sohni Mahiwal, Romeo Juliet... whateva suits you!!

Inder is a rebellious good for nothing hunk changing girlfriends every day while Saru is labelled "vibhuthi aunty" due to her over conservative family upbringing. The opposites attract. Saru's dad (Manish Chaudhari with a Tam Bram accent) revolts and drives her away from home. Next, Inder settles her down and also gives Saru a proper makeover.

No more a Vibuthi behenji, Saru now gets proposed by her secret crush (a dapper Anurag Sinha). Will she accept this sudden proposal or find true love in Inder?!!

Harshvardhan and Mawra conjure a simmering hot chemistry, lending an authentic feel to the narrative. Manish Chaudhari and Murali Sharma lend good support. Himesh Reshammiya's compositions are utilised optimally, taking the story forward without losing pace.

Director-duo Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru have borrowed elements from multiple sources, particularly Rajshri's Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se (1978) and the Salman Khan- Revathi starrer Love (1991). Having said that, Sanam Teri Kasam certainly qualifies as an ideal date movie to be relished by youngsters. Valentine ka deal done, aha!!
