As the curtains rise and the opening scenes of a blockbuster movie unfold, there’s a palpable energy in the air. The audience settles in, ready to be whisked away into a mesmerizing world of cinema. Characters leap off the screen, their emotions tangible, their struggles relatable. Dialogues ring true, leaving an indelible mark on the viewers’ minds. And amidst this whirlwind of cinematic brilliance, one essential figure often remains hidden in the shadows – the storyteller behind the screen.

Indeed, as the famous line from ‘Kaalia’ echoes, “Hum jahan khade hote hain, line wahi se shuru ho jaati hai” (Where we stand, the line starts from there). It’s a poignant reminder of the pivotal role screenwriters play in the filmmaking process. A movie’s foundation rests upon a solid script, meticulously crafted by these storytellers.

Think about the countless times you’ve been moved by a character’s journey or enthralled by a well-crafted plot twist – all thanks to the genius of a screenwriter. Yet, despite their undeniable influence, screenwriters often find themselves relegated to the sidelines, overshadowed by the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry. As actors bask in the spotlight and directors receive accolades for their visionary work, screenwriters remain in relative obscurity and their contributions often go unrecognised.

Though the lack of visibility remains a glaring issue, another challenge that many screenwriters often encounter is inadequate compensation and limited control over their own projects. At times, even some of the more established writers find themselves struggling to secure stable remuneration in an industry known for its volatility. And despite awards ceremonies paying lip service to the importance of screenwriting, true recognition remains elusive for many talented individuals.

However, in recent times things have changed for the better, the industry is slowly, but surely beginning to understand the value of a good script, a well written song, and the importance of a moving dialogue. By shining a light on the creative and technical intricacies of screenwriting, we can foster a greater appreciation for the craft among industry insiders and audiences alike. It’s time to lift the veil of ignorance and recognize that every memorable scene, every emotional beat, begins with good writing.

Bringing stories to life is a collaborative effort, with each contributor playing a vital role in the final product. Screenwriters are the architects of these cinematic experiences, their words shaping the very fabric of our imagination. They may be just a drop in the ocean, but their impact is immeasurable, filling the depths of our collective consciousness with stories that resonate long after the credits roll.

So, let’s not forget to give credit where credit is due. Let’s celebrate the faceless heroes behind our favourite films and OTT shows, and ensure that the art of writing continues to flourish. After all, without them, a good movie can simply not exist.
