The Rule of 1/3: Sustaining Professional Endurance in the Corporate Arena

Authored by Prasad Shejale, Founder and CEO, LS Digital

A few days back, I found myself struggling to muster the motivation to stick to my training plan. Despite feeling sluggish, I pushed myself to complete a gruelling session. It was during this challenging workout that my trainer reminded me of an important principle: the Rule of 1/3. This encounter prompted me to reflect on the significance of this rule both in sports and professional life.

In both the realms of sports and professional careers, the principle of consistency plays a pivotal role. Just as athletes build endurance through rigorous training routines, professionals can achieve greatness in their careers by adhering to the Rule of 1/3.

This rule emphasizes that approximately one-third of the time, individuals will feel strong and accomplished, another third they'll feel average or just okay, and the remaining third they might experience exhaustion or frustration. It's through navigating these cycles with resilience and determination that sustained growth and success are achieved.

Consistency breeds excellence, whether on field or in the boardroom. Great companies and exceptional careers aren't built overnight but are the result of consistent effort and dedication. Similar to adhering to a training program in sports, professionals must show up every day and tackle challenges head-on. The willingness to confront difficult tasks and persevere through adversity is what sets high achievers apart.

In the corporate world, there's a constant temptation to seek quick wins or engage in tasks that offer immediate gratification. However, true progress is made when individuals prioritize tackling the hard but essential tasks. It's during these moments of discomfort and challenge that real growth occurs. By embracing discomfort and choosing to tackle the tough issues, professionals can steer themselves towards meaningful achievements and long-term success. The Rule of 1/3 is a reminder of our humanity and the inherent fluctuations in our emotional and professional states. It's natural to experience moments of doubt, frustration, or exhaustion, especially in high-pressure environments. During tough times, such as market downturns or intense competition, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and question one's capabilities. However, understanding that these feelings are a normal part of the journey can provide solace and motivation to persevere.

On any given day, approximately one-third will be marked by a sense of accomplishment, where goals are met, and progress is evident. Another third will be characterized by routine, where tasks are completed, but the impact may not be immediately apparent. And finally, one-third may leave individuals feeling drained or uncertain about their abilities. However, it's crucial to recognize that each of these experiences contributes to personal and professional growth.

In times of adversity, it's essential to remind oneself of the Rule of 1/3. Instead of being disheartened by moments of struggle or uncertainty, view them as indicators of progress and resilience. By embracing the ebb and flow of professional life, individuals can cultivate the endurance needed to navigate challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.

In conclusion, the Rule of 1/3 serves as a guiding principle for professionals aiming to sustain long-term success in their careers. By understanding and embracing the cycles of strength, mediocrity, and adversity, individuals can cultivate the resilience and determination needed to thrive in the corporate arena. Remember, greatness is not achieved in one monumental effort but through consistent, deliberate action over time.
