US vs. Google: Perplexity caught in the crossfire

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is pushing for antitrust penalties against Google following a ruling that the tech giant holds a search monopoly. As part of its investigation, the DOJ seeks testimony from Dmitry Shevelenko, Chief Business Officer of AI-driven search provider Perplexity, to assess how generative AI is reshaping search access, distribution, and market competition.

Perplexity, with a valuation of $9 billion, poses a credible threat to Google Search through its AI-powered solutions. In response, Google has introduced its own AI search features to maintain its competitive edge.

The DOJ hopes Shevelenko’s insights will bolster their argument that Google’s dominance stifles innovation and competition, potentially warranting stricter penalties. However, Perplexity finds itself in a difficult position, facing subpoenas from both the DOJ and Google. While complying with some of Google's document requests, the company is resisting others due to the heavy data demands. Google is pushing for faster compliance.

This antitrust clash underscores the rapidly changing search industry and the critical role of AI in defining the future of digital competition.
