Viasat and ISRO to Boost In-Flight Connectivity Over India
In-Flight Communications (IFC) has become a vital revenue stream for satellite operators, with companies like Intelsat, SES, Eutelsat, and Viasat all competing to provide broadband connectivity to airline passengers. Additionally, Panasonic Aviation and Thales InFlyt are offering airlines entertainment options, including 4K channels and movies. However, connectivity over India has been limited, but this may soon change.
India’s Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is collaborating with Viasat, and according to media reports, Viasat CEO Mark Dankberg praised ISRO’s efforts. He noted that Viasat’s acquisition of Inmarsat has enhanced connectivity in India. "This puts us at the centre of many important communications over India," Dankberg said, referring to opportunities in government and commercial aviation as well as maritime sectors.
Dankberg also highlighted the upcoming launch of India’s high-capacity GSAT-20 satellite, developed by ISRO and operated by New Space India, as a significant opportunity to improve in-flight connectivity for Indian passengers. "Our Viasat and GSAT-20 will provide very real connectivity. Our ambition is simple, we seek more bandwidth, that’s faster and at lower cost," he added. Dankberg further emphasized Viasat’s plans for 2025, which include launching new satellites covering the Asia-Pacific region, and expressed optimism about India's growing role as a space power, noting the country's ability to develop cost-effective yet high-quality technology.
