Authored by Amit Sharma, Country Manager for India and South Asia at Virgin Music Group
2024 has been an incredible year for Virgin Music Group with the launch of music from multiple artists and labels, and key strategic partnerships. We are also supporting collaborations between acknowledged and emerging artists throughout the world. This strengthens the musical settings by embracing a variety of styles and categories, in addition to helping up-and-coming musicians achieve exposure. The music industry is dynamic, and we are looking forward to being a part of narratives shaping this transformative phase.
Following up on the success of Guli Mata, we have worked on another collaboration between Saad Lamjhaard and Neeti Mohan. Yimmy Yimmy was a collaborative Indie track by Tayc and Shreya Ghosal that featured leading Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez followed by Zaalima which was another international collaboration of Shreya Ghoshal and Dystinct featuring Bollywood actress Mouni Roy.
Key Trends and Developments
The Indian independent music industry has been undergoing significant growth, owing to evolving consumer preferences, technological advancements, and digital streaming innovations. We have witnessed a change in trends and diversity across artists and labels, with a growth in creativity innovation, collaborations and merging of genres in India. The developments are further leading to a shift in the dynamics of the industry.
As the industry develops and grows, we are aiming to foster innovation, while offering infrastructure, expertise and services to artists and establishing opportunities for artists to grow and thrive in a competitive landscape.
Over the next few years, we will likely see an array of noteworthy changes and developments in our industry, with innovative technological convergence, emerging platforms, shifting consumer preferences, and changing market dynamics. We at Virgin Music Group believe there is immense potential for the independent music industry and collaborative space to thrive in India, and that with our service offering, expertise and global reach, we will contribute to providing independent artists with the platform they need to debut their music and receive the recognition they deserve.
Expectations from 2025
With the new year, we will continue to work and invest with independent artists and labels who bring forth original music. Leveraging our artist centric approach, we will encourage musicians to create music true to their artistic vision and support them in every possible manner. We are looking forward to increasing the Indian footprint internationally through meaningful and innovative collaborations, focused marketing leveraging data driven insights, and expanding reach with new and wider audiences.
The industry is always evolving and transforming, and Virgin Music Group is well-equipped to maximize the possibilities and develop strategies for effectively handling India's ever-changing musical landscape. We are particularly bullish about the emerging collaborative space and taking Indian music to non-Indian dysphoria markets too. We are hard at work on a few of them for 2025.
