Weekend Exclusive | MTV Rush is Revolutionary & Entertaining: Bejoy Nambiar
Adgully caught up with Bejoy Nambiar on the sets of MTV Rush as he talks about the show , his second feature film David , his penchant for films and much more.
Talking about the shift from cinema to television, he said, “My approach to MTV Rush has been like a film. Every episode is like a short film. I am extremely excited especially because it gave me the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented people and people whom I have always looked forward to work with.”
Providing insight into how MTV Rush was conceived, he says, “MTV liked the world of Shaitan and the way the life of teenagers was depicted in the movie. I would never do a second Shaitan. I then pitched this idea to MTV of a feature film script I had written long time back. They liked the idea and that is how it started. We then collaborated with Akarsh Khurana who has a massive actors’ bank in his theatre group. I was eager to work with him since quite a long time. We have extremely talented actors on-board for MTV Rush. A lot of actors from his theatre group play main protagonists in the show.”
Speaking about the hereculean challenges that were faced in the execution of a show that is poised to be different from what has been witnessed on Indian television so far, he said, “The execution has been difficult. The most significant challenge was to raise the bar in a short time. It has been possible only because of the great support of the whole team of MTV and MTV Rush as well as the production company -Face Productions. Everybody has worked very hard to make this project come true.”
Talking about his association with MTV Bejoy says, “MTV is known for creating pathbreaking content. With MTV Rush, we have raised the bar on Indian television. I believe the time has come for us to experiment. Audiences are ready to accept different content. The avenues have gone bigger. Multiple platforms have evolved for innovative and exciting content.”
Speaking about his experience of shooting the series, he says, “Mtv Rush is an unbelievable experience. Every director of each episode of the thirteen part film has contributed their best and I am more than happy with the end result. It will find its audience because it has a different feel and vibe.”
The backdrop of MTV Rush is a college festival. The show essentially addresses stories that the youth can relate to. On being asked, what the youth could imbibe from the show, Bejoy says, “I am not here to preach. I am just here to tell stories that are happening around. I tell stories that make me want to reflect how I perceive certain stories should be. In the course of it, if there is a deeper meaning you can take, it is great. I am here to entertain and MTV Rush is an attempt to have fun.”
To give MTV Rush a realistic feel, live bands and musicians were invited to perform at the college festival. Commenting on the same, Bejoy said, “ I love using all kinds of music. When the concept of a college festival came up, I thought this would be a great platform to showcase real talent. Michael Bartender, Prashant Pillai , Shweta Pandit , Shruti Hassan are some of the artists who have performed.”
He believes that the concept of MTV Rush is its forte. “There is an attempt that has been made in the show which makes the show unique. A lot of things have been drawn from real life experiences and all the characters depicted are extremely close to my heart.”
Bejoy’s next project is David starring South Superstar Vikram, Tabu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Monica Dogra, Isha Sharvani and other supporting characters. He points out that each story demands its own characters and accordingly the casting is done. The film would be of multiple genres revealed Nambiar. Bejoy Nambiar looks up to his mentor Mani Ratnam for inspiration in cinema.
