What India’s celebrities want the new government to focus on
Mumbai goes to polls today (May 20, 2024) in the 5th phase of the ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Home to one of the biggest movie industries of the world, Mumbai’s Bollywood celebrities bring a lot of glamour to the poll proceedings. As per news reports, Akshay Kumar has cast his first vote as an Indian citizen. Also seen among the early voters were Paresh Rawal, Janhvi Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Tabu.
In this poll season, Adgully spoke to some of the celebrities from the television world to know about the important issues that they want the new Government to address, as well as the vital factors for them to vote for a particular candidate.
Shiwani Chakraborty (‘Mati Se Bandhi Dor’):
“I think, in the past few months we have seen many rape cases happening. The government should implement strict policies for the protection and empowerment of women, and ensure strict enforcement of laws against gender-based violence. As young voters, you have the power to bring change. Understand the issues, choose the right leaders, and take part in creating a better tomorrow. Vote with hope and responsibility.”
Ishaan Singh Manhas (‘Saavdhaan India’):
“I think with the growing cost of everything, one thing that should be equal is education. Enhancing the quality of education and ensuring it is accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic background, is one important thing that the government should focus on. Every vote counts. Young people, this is your chance to shape the future of our country. Make your voice heard and vote wisely.”
Saanand Verma (Saxenaji from ‘Bhabhji Ghar Par Hai’):
“I feel the government should be implementing policies to combat climate change and protect natural resources, the way the temperatures in summers are, so high that it is a threat to everyone, hence, proper measures should be taken. Democracy is a gift. Use your vote to build a nation that you and future generations will be proud of. Be informed and be responsible.”
Vaishali Made (singer, judge of reality shows):
“There are some basic issues that have been neglected since long, such as the growing unemployment, and the suicide of farmers in Maharashtra. Farmers are the backbone of the nation; without them, the fields would be barren and the tables empty. I would encourage more youth to make the right decisions for their country. It is a right that they shouldn’t miss.”
