Will blockbuster overload in last quarter of 2024 hit movies' Box Office performance?

The great Indian movie industry is all set to end 2024 with a bang, as the last quarter of this year is chock-a-bloc with big releases lined up back to back to leverage the festive frenzy. The film industry, so far this year, has seen its fair share of ups and downs.

‘Stree 2’ has been a runaway success, snapping up around Rs. 840 crore in worldwide earnings. Another horror-comedy from the Maddock Films stable, ‘Munjya’, has also wowed the audiences. Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, Kriti Senon’s ‘Crew’, Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon’s ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Shaitaan’, and Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone’s ‘Fighter’ are among the films that have done decent business at the Box Office.

But the major performer of the year so far has been Telugu film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan. The movie scored over Rs 1,010 crore worldwide. Its Hindi dubbed version, too, has done well. South Indian cinema has once again trumped Bollywood. Vijay’s ‘The Greatest of All Time’ has earned Rs 443 crore worldwide. Recently released ‘Devara Part 1’, featuring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor, too, has opened well with Rs 140 crore worldwide and is expected to do well at the Box Office.

The middle of the year has been lackluster. But the phenomenon of the re-release of old movies of early 2000s and even 1990s has taken many by surprise. Most of these re-releases have done well, attracting movie-goers into cinema halls. Among these, horror-fantasy film ‘Tumbbad’ has put up a really impressive show. Originally released in 2018, the film had not done too well at that time. However, it is having a fantastic run in its re-release.

Adgully takes a look at the new releases lined up for the remaining three months of 2024 that are expected to shine at the Box Office.

Vasan Bala’s ‘Jigra’ tells the story of a sister and brother. The jail-break drama stars Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina and is releasing on October 11, along with with Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri’s ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’, a rom-com set in 90’s. Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Vettaiyan’ is also expected release on the occasion of Dussehra, along with ‘Martin’ featuring Dhruva Sarja.

The biggest Box Office clash will be on the day of Diwali, that is, November 1, when ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’, starring Kartik Aaryan, Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimrii, Madhuri Dixit Nene, releases. The movie will clash with Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham Again’ starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor and others. It will be interesting to see which movie the audience prefers as both movies are part of highly successful prequels.

Suriya and Bobby Deol’s much talked about mega budget fantasy drama ‘Kanguva’ will have a solo release on November 14. It will release in multiple languages and in 3D format as well.

Anurag Basu is bringing a new set of love stories in the upcoming film ‘Metro… in Dino’ on the screen on November 29, a multi-starrer featuring Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and more. A week prior to this Karan Johar is also releasing a second passionate love story under the ‘Dhadak’ franchise from his production banner starring Triptii Dimri and Siddhanth Chaturvedi, which is a remake of Tamil film ‘Pariyerum Perumal’.

The next biggest clash will be on December 6, when Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’, based on the life of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is going to be released along with Allu Arjun’s hugely anticipated film ‘Pushpa 2’. Incidentally, both these films will have Rashmika Mandanna playing a female lead.

The end of the year (December 25), too, is likely to see two films releasing on same day – Varun Dhawan’s ‘Baby John’ which is a remake of Atlee’s ‘Theri’. Also releasing on Christmas is Aamir Khan’s sports drama ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. It may be noted here that several of Aamir Khan’s Christmas releases – right from ‘3 Idiots’, ‘PK’ to ‘Dangal’ – have done exceptional business.
