A lifetime of gratitude: Vikram Sakhuja reflects on AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award

Vikram Sakhuja, one of the most respected and accomplished leaders in the advertising and media industry, was honoured with the AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award in Mumbai yesterday (January 10, 2025). Known for his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and transformative contributions, Sakhuja’s career has spanned decades of groundbreaking achievements. From pioneering media strategies to shaping the industry’s future, his journey is a story of innovation, collaboration, and gratitude.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Sakhuja shared anecdotes, lessons, and memories that reflected his humility and wit. “Anything that I would say from now on is just going to go downhill,” began Vikram Sakhuja, as he accepted the AAAI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Sakhuja, standing amidst industry stalwarts, expressed his humility at being counted among the 31 greats who had received this honour before him. “It’s particularly wonderful to see five earlier winners here – Sam, Ramesh, Madhukar, Arvind, and Shashi, all over here. They’ve been perfect beacons, inspiring me and teaching me so much. To be counted amongst them feels absolutely super special.”

Acknowledging the significance of the moment, Sakhuja reflected on the journey that led him here. “When I was told I was receiving a lifetime achievement award, my first reaction was, Wow! But why? I mean seriously, why? Somewhere along the way, I realized that it’s not the destination, it’s always the journey.”

Reflecting on the foundations of his life and career, Sakhuja attributed much of his success to his upbringing. “My late mother, God bless her soul, truly was one of a kind – practical, fair, loving, and always there for us. A giver, never a taker,” he said. He revealed how his mother became a single parent in 1971 and took on the role of a family leader with grace. “She was a CEO who never was,” he shared, adding that her resilience, strength, and values shaped his outlook on life.

Tracing his early years, Sakhuja credited his schooling at Modern School for instilling discipline and nurturing his curiosity. His time at IIT Delhi was transformative, equipping him with survival skills and problem-solving abilities that would later become crucial in his career. “By the time I joined IIM, I knew I wanted to pursue marketing. It felt like my future was finally taking shape,” he said.

Sakhuja’s speech also broke with convention when he thanked his wife, Simi, early on – a gesture that drew warm applause. “For those who know Simi, they know she’s infinitely more fun and lights up every room she walks into,” he said. He described how Simi had sacrificed her journalistic career with Time Magazine to support his professional aspirations. “She has pivoted effortlessly through roles – from journalism to fitness training, to being a Punjabi YouTube blogger. She’s the highest action-bias person I know and brings both light and electricity into my life.”

Sakhuja’s professional journey began with stints at DCM and SRF, where he learned the importance of professionalism, ethics, and attention to detail. He credited P&G for teaching him foundational business principles. “At P&G, I had the privilege of learning from stalwarts like Joy Gupta, Bharat Patel, and Shantanu Khosla,” he said.

“The mantra at P&G was to respect the company’s money, simplify complexities, and always respect individuals,” he explained. This ethos stayed with him and became a guiding principle in his career.

His tenure at Coca-Cola marked another significant chapter. Here, he honed his skills in brand-building and gained firsthand experience in the fast-paced world of product launches. “The launch of Sprite, Diet Coke, and the relaunch of Thums Up were cherished milestones,” he recalled.

Sakhuja shared how his team leveraged the power of cultural touchpoints to amplify their brand’s presence. “We built properties like Coke P Live and saw how cricket, movies, and music could amplify brand impact,” he said.

In 2000, Sakhuja joined Mindshare, marking the beginning of a transformative phase in his career. “Mindshare opened a world of possibilities for me. The transition from traditional media planning to a broader scope of content, activation, and trading was transformative,” he said.

He credited industry stalwart Sam Balsara for shaping his understanding of agency management. Sakhuja also reflected on the seismic changes in the media landscape during this period. “The industry was evolving rapidly, and being part of that evolution was both challenging and exciting,” he said.

One of his most cherished achievements at Mindshare was playing a pivotal role in the launch of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. “Lalit Modi signed us as the agency after a pivotal meeting. The rest, as they say, is history. Launching IPL remains one of the most defining experiences of my career,” he reminisced.

The IPL not only revolutionized cricket, but also showcased the power of innovative media and marketing strategies. For Sakhuja, it was a masterclass in harnessing creativity, strategy, and execution.

Throughout his speech, Sakhuja emphasized the importance of people in his journey. “This award is not just mine. It belongs to everyone who has influenced me – colleagues, mentors, and clients who have shaped my path,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the many teams he had worked with over the years, calling them the unsung heroes behind his achievements. “From junior associates to senior leaders, every individual has taught me something valuable,” he said.

Sakhuja also highlighted the role of mentorship in his career, thanking those who guided him during pivotal moments. “To my mentors – thank you for believing in me even when I doubted myself,” he said.

As Sakhuja neared the end of his speech, he took a moment to reflect on the broader lessons of his journey. “Somewhere along the way, I realized that it’s not the destination, it’s always the journey,” he said.

He shared his belief in the power of gratitude and staying grounded. “To be here today is a privilege I don’t take lightly. This moment is a reminder of how far we’ve come as an industry and how much more we can achieve together,” he said.

Sakhuja’s closing words were a fitting tribute to the people, moments, and milestones that defined his career. “Thank you for this incredible honour. It’s a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
