Anupam Kher Shines, But ‘Vijay 69’ Falls Short as a Predictable Triathlon Tale
A direct to Netflix release; Vijay 69 features Anupam Kher in the titular role (69 is his age), who participates in the local triathlon to realise his inner dream. Lazily scripted and predictable to the core, the less than two hours movie becomes an exercise in monotony for its viewers.
Vijay Mathew (Kher) is a long retired swimming coach, who sacrificed his national level dream to raise a family. At the ripe age of sixty nine, he gets a freak chance to participate in the triathlon and redeem himself. Will he be able to do it?!!
Director Akshay Roy tries to layer humour in his narrative but barring a few scenes, fails to bring a smile on your face. Vijay's medical checkup sequence is more cringe than funny. Chunky Panday as Vijay's bestie cum doctor gets his Parsi mannerisms spot on. The rest of the performances particularly Mihir Ahuja and Ketika Sharma, are earnest and fine.
Obviously, Anupam Kher is superlative as Vijay but the script offers him nothing new. The only enjoyable moments are his camaraderie with two youngsters- fellow contestant (Mihir) and his supportive girlfriend (Ketika). Rest of Vijay 69 is just an average fare bordering on boredom!!
