BIG FM initiates to curb noise pollution in Kolkata

BIG FM, the radio arm of Reliance Media World Ltd., has launched an initiative to curb noise pollution, in association with Kolkata Police, PUBLIC (People United for Better Living in Calcutta) and Response- NO HONKING DAY on 18th May 2010.The awareness campaign which will be carried out on-air and on ground will focus on spreading the right information and will urge people not to blow their car horns repeatedly on roads.

The campaign kicked off at Loudon Street on 18th May'10, one of the busiest intersections in Kolkata. Our very own RJ Koushik went live on air on Big Chumuk ( 7 AM to 11AM) with K. Hari Rajan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kolkata and Tollywood actor Arjun Chakraborty who spoke about this social initiative.

Noise Pollution effects physical and mental health .It can cause hypertension, high stress level, sleep disturbance, severe depression and other psychological problems. Chronic exposure to noise may cause hearing loss. With unnecessary honking becoming a menace, 92.7 BIG FM in association with Kolkata Police, PUBLIC and Response aims to raise public awareness about the consequences of harmful noise and motivate people to take action against the noise pollution.

School children along with BIG FM promoters distributed stickers to promote NO HONKING to the drivers. Placards were put up to discourage motorists from honking excessively. SMILEYS were distributed to the drivers who did not adhere to the campaign. They were asked to co operate and help their fellow motorists enjoy a noise free drive.
