DS Group pioneers environmental innovation with Liquid Tree
The Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group), a renowned FMCG conglomerate, has collaborated with climate tech startup Liquid Trees to unveil India’s first outdoor Liquid Tree. This innovative installation, located at the DS Group Headquarters in Noida, marks a significant step in the battle against climate change and urban air pollution.
The Liquid Tree, a cubical structure containing 1600 liters of a microalgae solution, is capable of capturing the same amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) as six mature trees. This pioneering urban photo-bioreactor merges nature, technology, and art, highlighting the incredible potential of microalgae in creating a sustainable environment.
Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that grow rapidly and offer multiple environmental benefits, including particulate matter removal, CO2 sequestration, and oxygen production. In addition to combating air pollution, the harvested microalgae support a circular economy, providing nutrient-rich feed for local plants. Unlike traditional trees, which can take years to mature, microalgae can be deployed in just weeks, making them a highly effective solution for pollution-prone urban areas.
Announcing the installation, Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman of DS Group, shared: “The installation of the Liquid Tree is a testament to our commitment to environmental sustainability. We are confronted with the dual challenges of climate change and air quality, and it is essential that we embrace innovative solutions that leverage nature’s capabilities to address these pressing issues. The Liquid Tree not only plays a functional role in our fight against pollution but also stands as a powerful symbol of our potential to innovate in the face of climate change. At DS Group, we are dedicated to supporting initiatives that contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for Bharat.”
Abhinav Palaparthy, spokesperson and head of Liquid Trees India, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying: “Trees have long been recognized for their vital role in sustaining life on Earth, and we are now introducing a new form of 'tree'—microalgae, the original lifeforms that pioneered oxygen production. The installation at DS Group’s headquarters is the first of its kind in India, reaffirming the country’s leadership in green and sustainable building practices. We are thrilled to collaborate with DS Group, a company that shares our commitment to sustainability and a greener future.”
This installation not only showcases the practical applications of microalgae in tackling urban pollution but also underscores DS Group’s ongoing efforts to lead the way in environmental innovation, creating a blueprint for sustainable urban development in India and beyond.
