Elon Musk claims major cyberattack on X
Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has alleged that the platform was hit by a massive cyberattack on Monday, causing widespread outages for thousands of users. Musk suggested that the attack was not just an isolated incident but a well-funded, highly coordinated effort.
Taking to X, he posted, "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources." He went on to speculate that the attack might have been carried out by “either a large, coordinated group and/or a country.”
Musk Points to Ukraine-Based IP Addresses
Later, in an interview with Fox Business, Musk claimed that the cyberattack traced back to IP addresses located in Ukraine. However, he did not provide specific evidence to support this assertion.
Cybersecurity experts were quick to warn that an IP address alone does not confirm the true source of an attack. Hackers often disguise their locations by routing traffic through compromised servers in different countries. Some experts believe that the attack could have originated elsewhere, with Ukraine simply being used as a cover.
Widespread Disruptions Reported
According to outage tracker Downdetector, issues on X peaked around 10 a.m. ET, with nearly 40,000 users experiencing difficulties accessing the platform. Although reports temporarily declined, they surged again around noon before gradually stabilizing.
Since Musk’s takeover of X in 2022, the platform has faced multiple technical glitches, service outages, and cyber threats. However, the scale of this alleged attack has raised fresh concerns about security vulnerabilities and potential geopolitical implications.
Neither X nor its security team has provided further details on how the attack was carried out or what countermeasures are being implemented.
