Film critic Aruna Vasudev passes away on Sept 5
Renowned film critic Aruna Vasudev died on September 5, 2024, at the age of 88. Often referred to as the "mother of Asian cinema," she had been battling Alzheimer’s and was receiving medical care prior to her passing. Her final rites were performed on 3 pm on Friday, and a memorial service will take place on September 8 at the Kamla Devi Auditorium, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, in honor of her remarkable legacy.
Throughout her distinguished career, Vasudev received numerous national and international accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in Colombo. She served as a jury member at the 1989 Locarno Film Festival and edited or co-edited 13 books, including one she translated from French to English. Vasudev also served as director of Osian's-Connoisseurs of Art Private Limited and was a Trustee.
Vasudev led the foundation of Cinemaya: The Asian Film Quarterly and Cinefan, and her passion for cinema began in the 1960s when she attended film classes in New York while her father was stationed there. In addition to her work as a film critic, she was a talented editor, painter, and documentary filmmaker. She earned a doctorate from the University of Paris, focusing on cinema and censorship.
