Filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari: “Locations Are characters in my films”

Filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, known for her authentic storytelling and unique cinematic style, recently shared her creative journey at the India International Film Tourism Conclave (IIFTC), emphasizing the pivotal role of locations in shaping her films. "Every place has a soul—a fragrance, a rhythm, a story waiting to be told," said Ashwiny, reflecting on her approach to filmmaking.

From the bustling streets of Agra to the vibrant alleys of Bareilly, Ashwiny's films have a distinct ability to capture the essence of small-town India. "Locations aren’t just backdrops; they’re characters in my stories," she explained. Her film Bareilly Ki Barfi is a testament to this philosophy, breathing life into small-town India with an authenticity that resonates universally.

Ashwiny’s dedication to capturing the cultural essence of her chosen locations often leads her to take unconventional steps. Recalling one memorable instance, she shared, "During a shoot, I sat reversed on a scooter while holding the camera just to capture the rawness of a busy marketplace." This anecdote highlights her hands-on approach to filmmaking, where every shot is crafted with precision and passion.

Her storytelling extends beyond India's borders, as Ashwiny's experience filming in Serbia for an international project broadened her creative perspective. "Serbia has a controlled, almost poetic quality to its streets. Shooting there taught me the beauty of working within constraints while still bringing my vision to life," she said, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of filming in a foreign country.

Filmmaking abroad, however, presents its own set of challenges. Ashwiny pointed out the contrast between working in India and abroad, noting that filmmaking in India often allows for a certain spontaneity. "We can adapt and innovate on the fly," she said, whereas abroad, there is a greater focus on rigid schedules, permits, and a precision-driven crew. "It pushes you to plan meticulously, but it also opens your eyes to a whole new way of storytelling," she added.

The differences between the fluidity of Indian film sets and the structured approach abroad have significantly influenced Ashwiny's filmmaking process. "In Serbia, every second of shoot time is accounted for, which can be challenging but also rewarding," she shared. On the other hand, the flexibility in India allows for a more organic approach. "That chaos has its charm," she said with a smile.

Despite these contrasts, Ashwiny finds a universal truth in how locations inspire her narratives. "Every place—a small Indian town or a European city—has a unique voice. It’s my job to listen and translate that voice into a story," she remarked.

Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's journey, from the colorful chaos of Bareilly to the serene streets of Serbia, proves that storytelling transcends borders. Whether it’s the places we inhabit or the people who make them extraordinary, Ashwiny continues to demonstrate that every location holds the key to a powerful and universal story.
