Lesson for Turner in India? Cartoons are its revenue mainstay in Philippines

What has been characterised as "kiddie space' has afforded Turner Entertainment Networks Asia Inc more than two-thirds of its business in the Philippines, a company executive has told the local media.

The executive, Jeremy Carr, told the media recently that the Cartoon Network, Turner's premier channel, is concentrating on 10-year-old viewers.

Carr said that the kiddie space was registering steady growth, and that TV enjoyed unassailable leadership in that space, with about 3,40,000 units being sold as of October.

Turner contends that pay television would register a growth of up to 10% annually in the next five years in the Philippines. Carr, however, conceded that it would be a mistake not to capitalise on the rising influence of the internet.

He said that a Turner survey of 1,000 parents of children aged between 7 and 14 years had revealed that internet access had risen by 39%. This represents a dramatic spike in internet connectivity because in 2005, only 300 of the respondents had computers at home.
