Lloyds Banking Group Ad banned for greenwashing
Lloyds Banking Group faced backlash as the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned one of its sustainability ads, citing misleading environmental claims. A LinkedIn post promoting the bank's reduced reliance on fossil fuels and renewable energy investments was flagged for omitting significant information about its ongoing financing of high-emission industries.
The ASA stated the ad “gave the impression that renewable energy formed a significant proportion” of Lloyds' financing, contradicting its 2023 sustainability report, which disclosed emissions equivalent to 32.8 million tonnes of CO2.
The watchdog criticized Lloyds for failing to contextualize its environmental claims, asserting this omission likely misled consumers. Lloyds responded, maintaining its commitment to net-zero goals by 2050, stating, “The ASA council outcome relates to a single LinkedIn post for a sustainability awareness day, which will not be repeated.”
This marks the second instance of greenwashing violations in the banking sector, following a similar ruling against HSBC in 2022. Campaigners like Adfree Cities are pushing for stricter laws to curb ads from major polluters.
