Netflix fined 4.75 million euro for GDPR violations by Dutch DPA
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has fined Netflix €4.75 million for insufficiently informing customers about the use of their personal data between 2018 and 2020. An investigation launched in 2019 revealed that Netflix's privacy statements lacked clarity regarding the purpose, legal basis, data-sharing practices, retention policies, and data security during international transfers.
Dutch DPA chairman Aleid Wolfsen criticized Netflix, stating, "That must be crystal clear," especially when customers seek clarification. The case stemmed from complaints by Austrian NGO None of Your Business, highlighting cross-border GDPR violations. Netflix, which has since updated its privacy practices, is contesting the fine.
