MeitY blocks 1,410 online betting and gaming websites since 2022

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has revealed that it has issued 1,410 blocking directions against online betting, gambling, and gaming websites and mobile applications between 2022 and February 2025. This information was disclosed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The blocking actions underscore the government's ongoing efforts to regulate the burgeoning online gaming sector and address concerns related to illegal betting and gambling activities. These blocking directions, issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000, aim to curb the accessibility of platforms that violate Indian laws and regulations.
"MeitY has issued 1410 blocking directions related to online betting/gambling/gaming websites (including mobile applications) between the year 2022- 25 (till February, 2025)," stated Minister Vaishnaw in his response.
The government's actions reflect a multi-pronged approach to regulating the online gaming industry, which includes taxation, GST implementation, and data protection measures. The blocking of websites and applications forms a critical part of this strategy, targeting platforms that operate outside the legal framework.

The Minister also detailed other regulatory measures, including the introduction of a 30% tax on net winnings from online games and the implementation of a 28% GST rate. Additionally, the government is focusing on regulating offshore online money gaming platforms under the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) Act.

The Directorate General of GST Intelligence has been empowered to direct intermediaries to block unregistered online money gaming platforms, including those operating from offshore locations, that violate the IGST Act.
The government's actions are in line with its broader objective of creating an open, safe, trusted, and accountable internet for its users. The blocking of illegal online gaming platforms is seen as a crucial step in safeguarding users from potential financial and social risks associated with unregulated gambling and betting activities.
