MMVD launches ‘The Buckle Hack’ to promote seatbelt safety

With seatbelt usage alarmingly low in India—only 25% of motorists buckle up, leading to 83% of casualties among car occupants—the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Department (MMVD) has unveiled a game-changing initiative to reinforce road safety.
Introducing ‘The Buckle Hack’, a simple yet powerful design innovation that transforms commercial vehicles into lifesaving seatbelt reminders. The initiative seamlessly integrates buckle-shaped stickers into the reflective tape on trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles, ensuring a constant visual cue that encourages all motorists to fasten their seatbelts.

Speaking about the initiative, Bharat Kalaskar, Additional Commissioner, Motor Vehicles Department, Government of Maharashtra, emphasized: “People often forget to buckle up, and that is a major cause of fatalities. This initiative serves as an essential reminder of the importance of seatbelts for our safety, and we aim for it to reach every driver in Maharashtra.”
Launched as part of Road Safety Awareness Month, ‘The Buckle Hack’ is currently being rolled out across key cities, including Mumbai. By leveraging a simple yet creative design, MMVD aims to reshape driver behavior, promote responsible driving habits, and ultimately save lives.
