Netflix launches creative hub in Australia, celebrating 10 years
Nearly a decade ago, Australians welcomed Netflix into their homes, marking the start of a transformative journey in local storytelling. At a recent event in Chippendale, Sydney, Co-CEO Greg Peters celebrated the launch of Netflix's new hub dedicated to Australian productions.
He stated, “It's been an amazing journey to be able to work with incredible storytellers, some of which are represented in this room... All of which have graced our Top Ten lists not only here in Australia and New Zealand, but around the world.”
Peters highlighted the profound impact of Netflix's shows, such as Boy Swallows Universe, which regained popularity post-release, showcasing the “Netflix Effect” where compelling narratives reach vast audiences. He emphasized Netflix’s commitment to fostering local talent: “We want amazing Australian storytellers to know that they can tell their incredible stories right here in Australia.”
The Honourable Tony Burke, Minister for the Arts, added that Netflix's permanent presence in Australia is a testament to its dedication to creativity. Over the past four years, Netflix has invested over $1 billion AUD in Australian content, resulting in more than 6,000 cast and crew hires and 250+ filming locations.
Looking ahead, Netflix plans to release numerous local titles, including Apple Cider Vinegar and the final season of Heartbreak High. Peters concluded, “...the talent, the facilities, the landscapes you have, they're unparalleled, there's no other place like it in the universe.”
