Scottish woman sues Netflix for $170M over Baby Reindeer
Fiona Harvey, a Scottish woman, is suing Netflix for $170 million over her portrayal in the hit miniseries "Baby Reindeer." Harvey claims the character "Martha," played by Jessica Gunning, is based on her and depicts her inaccurately as a violent stalker.
"Baby Reindeer," a dark comedy created by and starring Richard Gadd, centers around Gadd's character being stalked by "Martha." The seven-part series claims to be "a true story" but includes disclaimers about creative liberties taken for dramatic effect.
Harvey denies the show's portrayal, asserting she never stalked Gadd or anyone else. The lawsuit claims Netflix "told these lies...because it was a better story than the truth." Harvey provided documentation of a background check with no criminal convictions.
In contrast, "Martha" is depicted as a convicted stalker who sexually assaults Gadd's character. The series portrays her sending a massive number of emails and voicemails, culminating in her arrest.
Harvey alleges the show appropriated real comments and tweets from her, leading to death threats and social isolation. She claims Netflix failed to protect her anonymity despite Gadd's reported attempts to do so.
Netflix maintains they will "defend this matter vigorously" and support Gadd's right to tell his story. The lawsuit casts a shadow over the show, previously lauded for its portrayal of trauma.
